Dr. Nitrus Brio (or Brio for short) is a scientist who is best known for his achievements in gene modification. Brio initially worked for Dr. Cortex, but he eventually turned against him because Cortex was too pushy and kept all the credit from his hard work. They've been rivals ever since.

Brio invented the first fully operational Evolvo-Ray, something Cortex could only dream of, despite having tried the same for many years. The difference between Brio and Cortex is that while Brio's inventions always seem to work, he is never ambitious enough to overthrow his rival, or try anything grand. Because of this, it usually feels like Cortex is the smartest one, when it could very well be the other way around. Only rarely will Brio team up with someone else, if it helps getting revenge at Cortex.

Brio is capable of transforming himself into a monster. To do this, he drinks his own made up chemicals that he keeps in beakers. He has been seen transforming into a hulking giant and a huge frog-like creature. Brio has a peculiar way of talking, in that he stutters a lot, twitches, and laughs randomly in the middle of his sentences.
