Crash Bandicoot is a character originally created by Naughty Dog, now being developed by Radical Entertainment. He was designed by Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson, originally as a much more primitive creature, reminiscent of Taz the Tasmanian Devil. Later he evolved into a creature called Willy Wombat. He was finally revealed to the public in the form of Crash Bandicoot, the orange marsupial you are probably used to right now. Crash would soon become a successful platform series, and the most praised Western one in Japan.

The series pitch Crash against Dr. Neo Cortex, an evil scientist and the very creator of Crash Bandicoot. The first game was a simple 3D platformer (innovative for its time), and most other games in the series follow this formula. However, and as time passed by, Crash would gain a number of spin-offs, from racing to party games. Free-roaming was soon added to the formula, and more recently, melee combat techniques.

Also worth mentioning are the characters. What originally started out as a 9-character cast has tremendously grown over the years, into an enormous group of over 60 of them.

Another unique thing about Crash Bandicoot is the numerous teams that have worked with him, which is partly why there are so many characters, and why many plot-holes arise in the storyline. Crash Bandicoot games have so far been developed by Naughty Dog, Eurocom Entertainment Software, Traveller's Tales, Vicarious Visions, Traveller's Tales Oxford Studios, Radical Entertainment and Dimps, each leaving their own style and mark in the series. This was, perhaps, the most criticized aspect by the fandom, because it generated a lot of inconsistency in the series. After a long and bumpy ride, Crash has finally earned a permanent home at Radical Entertainment.

The series have without a doubt spawned a lot of fan work all over the World, which can be seen in the many fictions and sites made by lovers of the orange bandicoot (such as this one). There are those who prefer the classic games, those who like the new ones better, and those who just plain enjoy the series in whole.

With over 10 years of age now, Crash has lived many wild adventures. The series had a few rough times somewhere in the middle of its life span, but as all good characters do, Crash has successfully made his way back to his former glory.
